500+ ENC COCOONS/VERMICOMPOST

European Nightcrawler Cocoons  (Dendrobaena veneta now also called Eisenia hortensis)

Our entire breeding stock is imported from Europe in October 2016!!
Have you ever raised nightcrawlers or worms from the
cocoons (worm eggs)?  All you need to do is put the cocoons and the bedding they come in on top of moist bedding add a bit of food then keep them warm and moist and they will hatch.  About 70F is a good temperature to hatch worm cocoons.  The cocoons will average one to three worms per cocoon - so you will have a good start on your worm colony in a very short time.  You will need to keep the bedding moist not wet and don't place the bed/bin in direct sunlight or light.
Some cocoons should begin to hatch in about three weeks and others will continue to hatch over the next few weeks.   The newly hatched worms will look like short pink threads.   They grow rather quickly to recognizable little worms.

IMPORTANT!  Do not allow the young worms to become crowded.  As they grow you will need to divide them into several new beds/bins.  If they become crowded they will not grow to full size, they will become stunted in growth.

Here is more information on how to hatch worm cocoons.   And we have a few tips on raising European Nightcrawlers.  This is aninteresting link to a video by Cornell University:Vermicompost a Living Soil Amendment.

We hand count the cocoons and then add extra cocoons for the 200+ so you receive more than the amount you order and ship them in a small amount of bedding.  We hand count random samples of the cocoons shipped in vermicompost to be sure of the count.  All the cocoons are freshly sorted, vigorous and healthy.   We include sample bags of Our Worm Food and Limestone to help you get started.

Please feel free to contact us for any questions you have or any that might arise as you hatch your cocoons and raise your nightcrawlers.  We will be  happy to help you to the best of our ability.

We ship via USPS Priority Mail.  Someone should be there to accept the delivery.

We have Our Worm Food mixture in 5 lb. and 10 lb. quantities and agricultural limestone in 3 lb.,5 lb. and 10 lb.bags.

PLEASE DO NOT DISTURBthe cocoons once you have them in their new bed.  The hatchlings are very tiny and disturbing the bedding may suffocate them.  Their tunnels are also very tiny and they need them to be able to breathe air.

After about four weeks, if you wish to see the tiny worms, place a few small pieces of overripe muskmelon, banana or pear on top of the bedding.  After a couple of days remove the fruit and you should see some tiny worms where the fruit was.

IMPORTANT!  Do not allow the young worms to become crowded.  As they grow you will need to divide them into several new beds/bins.  If they become crowded they will not grow to full size, they will become stunted in growth.
